Contiguous Symmetric Shawl
Contiguous Symmetric is the third shawl of a series of three. It is a top down shawl with contiguous symmetric ridges which I designed to show off the richness of semisolid hand dyed yarn. This pattern gives instructions for two shawls. A light and airy shawl that can be wrapped around you completely, was knitted using ONE skein of a pale yellow lace yarn and needles size US6 – 4.0. A second shawl was casted on with TWO skeins of fingering weight yarn and same size needle to obtain a more compact and warm fabric. Dig into your stash: I’m sure there’s one special skein or two waiting… Let’s start to rock and roll!
Lace yarn - Sample shown was knit using One skein of Madelinetosh Prairie, 100 grams, 3.53 ounces, 840 yards (768 meters), 100% merino, color Milk.
Fingering yarn - Sample shown was knit using Two skeins of Eliza by Posh Yarn, Fingering/4ply, 75% Merino, 25% Nylon, 465 yards / 100 grams, 3.53 ounces, color Mayem.
Needle and notions
US 6 - 4.0 mm or size to obtain gauge. Tapestry Needle, Blocking Wires, T-pins, 1 set of 5 Stitch Markers.
Gauge - Exact gauge is not critical for this project. However, a looser gauge will result in the use of more yardage.
Gauge for stockinette sts after a gentle blocking is:
Lace weight: 21 sts by 36 rows = 4” by 4” (10cm by 10cm)
Fingering weight: 24 sts by 33 rows = 4” by 4” (10cm by 10cm)

Symmetrical Shawl

Symmetric is the second shawl of a series of three. The first is Contiguous Shawl. The third is being edited at the moment. Symmetric Shawl is a classic triangular shawl with symmetric ridges which I designed to show off the richness of semisolid hand dyed socks yarn. For this pattern, I used a red skein of yarn from my stash which I purchased directly from the dyer. It was there, calling for the right pattern. Dig into your stash: I’m sure there’s a special skein waiting… The border can be knitted two ways, either with a symmetric triangle pattern or in simple garter stitch. Let’s start to rock and roll!
